RED LIGHT THERAPY

The Science

Red light therapy, also known as low-level light therapy, uses specific red wavelengths at 660 nm and near infrared wavelengths at 850 nm to stimulate cellular processes, potentially improving skin health, reducing inflammation, and promoting wound healing by increasing cellular energy production (ATP) within the mitochondria; however, consult a healthcare professional before starting any new treatment, especially if you have pre-existing medical conditions.

Red light penetrates the skin, reaching the mitochondria within cells, which then triggers increased energy production leading to enhanced cell function and repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Potential benefits:
    • Improved skin texture and tone
    • Reduced wrinkles and fine lines
    • Acne treatment
    • Faster wound healing
    • Pain relief
    • Potential benefits for hair growth

  • Safety: Considered safe when used appropriately, with minimal side effects.

  • What are the benefits of red light therapy? Red light therapy can reduce inflammation, promote collagen production, and speed up tissue healing. It may also improve skin tone and texture, and reduce signs of aging.

  • Should I wear eye protection? Yes, everyone present during treatment should wear approved protective eyewear.

  • Can children use red light therapy? Children can use red light therapy with parental consent.

  • How long should each session last? Sessions typically last 10–30 minutes.

  • How often should I use red light therapy?  That depends on your goals and current condition. In general, acute injuries (sprains, abrasions, etc.) show rapid improvement and often resolve in 2-4 treatments. Long-term and chronic conditions may need up to 10 treatments to show significant benefits. Most clients do 3 times per week until their goals are met, then reduce to 1-2 times per week for maintenance. For athletes with a rigorous workload, 3-5 times per week is recommended for optimal recovery.

  • Who should not use red light therapy? NOT APPROPRIATE FOR THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS: pregnancy, epilepsy, active cancer lesions, and anyone taking photosensitive medications.

  • Can I use red light therapy on my face and body?  Yes, red light therapy devices can be used on various areas of the body including the face, neck, and scalp depending on the desired outcome.

  • What should I wear?  Most users prefer to be in their underwear. Delivering natural light to more surface area of your body leads to better light therapy outcomes. Lighter garments (underwear, bras, and socks) may be worn without hampering a treatment, though the covered areas not exposed directly to the light won’t receive any benefits.

  • What do I do BEFORE I begin my session?  Remove all jewelry that could refract light. Remove as much makeup as possible, and limit the use of lotions, especially ones with light-blocking agents. Hydration is vital to the success of the treatments, so please drink water throughout the day!

  • What will I feel? Is it hot?  The lights themselves do not become warm; however your circulation increases throughout the treatment, so you may experience a feeling of warmth. A quick energy boost or feeling of euphoria is also possible but differs per person.

  • How do I know if it's working?  Pain levels for acute or chronic conditions, improvements in color or texture of scars, improvements in skin texture and tone, quality of sleep, energy levels, recovery time post workout, and energy levels throughout the day are all good markers to track success. Keep a journal of how you feel before and after ... Does the aching knees still hurt or the tennis elbow require Tylenol to get through the day?
